What is Lockbox Processing?

                Lockbox processing is a service provided by our bank to collect and deposit payments in a timely and efficient manner. Checks are processed and deposited at the bank, and an electronic file of the payments is sent to the collector’s office to update customers’ accounts.

Why do we use it?

                Our office sends out over 31,000 bills over the course of the fiscal year between real estate, business personal property, motor vehicle excise and boat excise. Lockbox processing helps the staff of 3 in the collector’s office keep up with processing these payments throughout the year.  This service also benefits our taxpayers by faster check processing. Payments are picked up at the designated post office box daily and are processed and deposited usually on the same business day. All this means faster check clearing for customers, faster processing of receivables for the Town, and greater efficiency for staff.
