Visioning for the Coffin School Reuse

Event Date:
Tuesday, December 7, 2021 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Join the Town of Marblehead and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) on Tuesday, December 7th from 7-8:30PM for a virtual forum to hear from the community about their vision for the reuse of the Coffin School site. Register for the forum by visiting mapc.ma/coffin-school-visioning-forum.

The Coffin School site became vacant when school operations were relocated to the new Brown School on October 13, 2021. It is currently owned by the School Department and Town Meeting approval will be needed in order to dispose of the land. This process comes on the heels of the recently-completed Housing Production Plan, which detailed the need for more affordable and diverse housing options to meet the needs of Marblehead residents. A priority recommendation from the plan was to leverage public assets for mixed-income housing. This project is supported in full by a grant from MassHousing.

In order to determine the best way forward, we will be hosting a variety of public engagement opportunities where attendees will help identify a vision for the Coffin School site, review redevelopment scenarios, and provide input on priorities and tradeoffs. This will eventually inform a Request for Proposal to select a developer for the site that is best able to achieve the community’s vision.

The first opportunity to provide input on the Coffin School reuse will be a virtual forum on Tuesday, December 7th from 7-8:30PM. Learn more about the project and help prioritize housing typologies, density, open space, and other features of the redevelopment.
