Requirements and Documentation Required for
Applying for a Motor Vehicle Excise Tax Abatement
Requests for a motor vehicle excise tax abatement should be filed with the Assessors Office. Following are the requirements for applying for a motor vehicle excise tax abatement and the documents that must be presented:
If ownership of the motor vehicle is relinquished by means of:
- Sale - a copy of the bill of sale must be submitted.
- Trade - a copy of the new registration must be submitted.
- Donation - a copy of a letter from the charitable organization must be submitted.
- Junked - a copy of a receipt from the junk yard must be submitted.
- Totaled - a copy of the insurance company settlement must be submitted.
If the registration plates are:
- Returned to the Registry of Motor Vehicles - a copy of the Plate Return receipt must be submitted.
- Transferred to another vehicle - a copy of the new registration must be submitted.
If the motor vehicle owner has moved out of state:
- A copy of the out of state registration showing the registration date must be submitted.
- A copy of the Plate Return receipt from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles must be submitted.
